Aesthetic and plastic surgeon Doctor Roman Merle performs liposuction in Antibes. This procedure can get rid of unwanted, excess, localised body fat for good (around the buttocks, hips and tummy…).

When is liposuction appropriate?

Some excess fat is stubborn and really hard to shift, despite dieting and exercise. Liposuction can help: fat cells that are sucked out during the procedure cannot come back. Liposuction may be performed once physical development is complete (around 17 or 18 years’ old).

Liposuction procedure

Liposuction involves making some very fine incisions in the area to be treated and inserting round-tipped, hollow tubes (cannulas) with tiny holes in their ends. The cannulas are linked to a suction unit. A lot of progress has been made with liposuction over recent years and many different areas of the body can now be treated: thighs, knees, calves, ankles, arms, the back and even the face and neck (a double chin, for example). Dr Merle will use small incisions, generally hidden in the natural folds of the skin and so any scars are concealed. As soon as the procedure is done, the patient will be put into an elasticated support garment to reduce post-surgery swelling. Liposuction generally requires between 30 minutes and 2 hours to complete, depending on the treatment area. It is carried out under a general anaesthetic or a local anaesthetic with sedation.

After the procedure, the patient may be able to leave the hospital on the same day or, in some cases, may have to stay in for 24 hours.

The cost of liposuction performed in Antibes by aesthetic and plastic surgeon Doctor Roman Merle, starts at €2500 and is not reimbursed by Social Security.

What to expect following a liposuction procedure

Soit directement derrière la glande, en avant des muscles pectoraux
(positionnement prémusculaire)

Soit plus profondément, en arrière des muscles pectoraux
(positionnement rétromusculaire)

After surgery, you may feel a moderate level of discomfort: swelling and bruising are frequently experienced. The degree of discomfort will vary depending on the volume of fat removed. Doctor Roman Merle will be able to prescribe appropriate medication to help reduce any discomfort.

The elasticated support garment should be worn for between 3 and 6 weeks after the procedure. Practicing sport is not advised for a month. The final result will be visible several weeks after the procedure, once the swelling has gone.

Can other operations be combined with a liposuction procedure?

Dr Merle can also perform lipofilling – by taking the excess fat removed from the treatment area using liposuction and re-injecting it into another area of the body. Lipofilling is a technique that can be used, for example:
– to fill in facial wrinkles
– to provide greater volume to an over-thin face
– to re-contour the shape of the body
– to enhance the results of a breast augmentation procedure

If liposuction is performed on the tummy area, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can also be carried out when there is significant damage to the skin (stretch marks, distension) or to stomach muscles.
